Simple to make, delightful in taste, these homemade smileys are really going to bring in a smile in the family when they munch on them along with hot cup of tea

I am sure we all must have had or heard about Mccain Smileys so this is the homemade version of the Smileys. With the lock down period and the entire family together, I understand making delicious snacks with rationing of the ingredients isn’t easy so here comes the delightful , simple to prepare and instantly ready snacks for the family

I am not big fan of the fried dishes so I generally tend to prepare them less frequently but with the pandemic on, I am doing both fried as well as baked snacks, experimenting with various dishes.Smileys is something I prepare very occasionally when other day my kid asked for it. Now the store brought fries are machine made so yes they are more perfect in shape and design. You can make any kind of emoji face on the fries, I am sure kids would love this as well as the adults 🙂

*This can be baked for 20-25 minutes in preheated oven at 180 deg cel. Do generously brush the smileys with oil before baking

**Its essential to use parboiled potatoes else you wouldn’t be able to shape them. Increase corn flour to 2-3 tbsp in case unable to shape them. Chilling the dough is essential for shaping it

***If you are not immediately frying them , then freeze them in ziploc bag for 2 months. Thaw and immediately fry, do not bring them to room temperature

***Adjust the spices to your taste, you can add in additional spices/cheese/herbs of your choice for the desired flavour

Do watch the video for better clarity in preparation and share your experience once you prepare the dish

Preparation time:10 mins Cooking time: 10 mins Total time: 20 mins

Servings: 3-4

  • 3 medium parboiled potatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • Salt to taste
  • Pinch of Turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon Pepper/Red chili powder or to taste
  • 1.5-3 tbsp cornflour
  • Additional herbs if required

Steps to prepare

  • Grate parboiled potatoes in a bowl
  • Add in all the spices, corn flour, ginger garlic paste and salt
  • Mix well to form soft smooth dough
  • Cover with cling wrap and chill for 30 minutes
  • You can always roll out dough with greased rolling pin or grease palms and roll out dough. Use greased foil/parchment paper or greased plastic sheet else the dough will stick
  • Using round cutter , cut in roundels. Alternatively pinch small portion of the dough and shape with your hands
  • Once done, I had transferred the small roundels to silicon mat to prevent any sticking
  • Using straw, poke the eyes and using the spoon draw the smile
  • Chill for 20-25 minutes. You can store this in ziploc bag and freeze for 2 months
  • Heat oil for frying
  • Over medium high heat, fry until golden brown. Do not over crowd, fry in batches
  • Drain excess oil over tissue paper
  • Serve warm with dip of your choice
