Delightful creamy thick Indian sweet/dessert prepared from Sweet potatoes especially made during the festivals/occasions is one of the definite must-try dishes in this festive occasion. No festival in India is complete without Kheer so this Dussehra, we have gluten free, delectable kheer made from humble sweet potatoes

Sweet Potato Kheer Recipe is made from sweet potato shavings, and is subtly spiced, creamy and thick. Enjoy it after a heavy meal of Rajgira(Amaranth) paratha and Dahi Aaloo . This is so simple and easy to prepare and delicious in taste. You need not wait for Festival to prepare this, you can prepare this sweet treat any time you desire

*Pressure cook the sweet potatoes until 90% done to reduce cooking time. Do not over cook the sweet potatoes and make it mushy. You can use any method to cook sweet potatoes

**Instead of ghee- unsalted butter or oil also can be used. Sweet potatoes has it’s own sweetness so adjust sweetness as desired

Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 30 mins Total time: 50 mins

Servings: 3


  • 1/2 litres full fat milk
  • 120 g sweet potato
  • 3-4 tbsp sugar- adjust
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 2-3 tbsp cashews, halved
  • 2 teaspoon ghee
  • 1 generous pinch saffron strands
  • 1/4 teaspoon rose water – optional

Steps to prepare

  • Boil water in a vessel and add sweet potatoes to boiling water
  • Boil it for 3-4 minutes. Switch off
  • Let it remain in hot water on burner for 15 minutes. Alternatively pressure cook the sweet potatoes until 80-90% done to reduce cooking time
  • Now peel skin and grate sweet potatoes. Keep it aside
  • Heat milk in deep bottom vessel
  • Stir and bring to boil
  • Add grated sweet potatoes and mix well
  • Add saffron and mix well
  • Now cook until milk reduces to half its quantity
  • Add sugar and mix well. Now since sweet potatoes has it’s own natural sweetness so adjust sweetness
  • Cook until kheer reaches desires consistency
  • Add cardamom powder, rose water and mix well
  • Heat ghee in a small pan and add cashews
  • Saute cashews until golden brown
  • Add fried nuts with ghee to the Kheer and mix well
  • Serve delicious Sweet potatoes kheer warm or cold as desired. Best served chilled
