Some might argue that once sugars are added, the dish ceases to be healthy so let me put it this way, amongst all the sweet cakes, this is the healthiest option when you want to satisfy your cravings for cake and yet do not want to compromise your diet

I had seen various types of Oats cakes being prepared and I still argue that just the addition of Oats cannot make any dish healthy, so I decided to make this cake such that it’s as healthy as possible. Now any food has to be consumed in moderation , be it healthy or otherwise

The cake might not be as heavenly in taste as regular chocolate cake yet it is absolutely delicious. I dusted the cake with icing sugar on top for additional taste. You can skip it or alternatively you can drizzle chocolate sauce for additional taste . The cake tastes amazingly good. Do try and share your experience!

Servings: 6


  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup instant Oats
  • 1 Egg / Flax egg (veg version)
  • 170 g Coconut Sugar
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup low fat milk
  • 1/4 cup veg oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped Walnuts
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract

Steps to prepare

  • Preheat oven to 180 deg cel and line cake tin with baking paper
  • Ground instant oats to powder and keep it aside
  • In a bowl, sieve flour, cocoa powder, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
  • Add ground oats to sieved mixture. Mix everything well and keep it aside
  • Whisk egg in a bowl
  • Add Coconut sugar to the egg. You can use Palm Jaggery or regular Jaggery granules too
  • Whisk well for 3-4 minutes
  • Now add oil and vanilla extract, whisk well
  • Add 1/3 cup milk and whisk well
  • Now add 1/3 cup of dry ingredients and whisk well. You need to alternatively add dry ingredients and milk and whisk well
  • Add nuts and fold in getly
  • Pour the batter into prepared cake tin
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until done. Now I kept the batter on the counter while clicking pics which resulted in slight cracks in the cake. Please never rest batter on the counter as the leavening agents will start reacting
  • Allow the cake to cool for 15-20 minutes in the pan. Demould and cool on wire rack completely

Dusting with icing sugar, slice and serve
