Delicious, heavenly cake with flavors of both coffee and cardamom in every bite makes this one of the must try cakes. Since the frosting also contains coffee, its too delicious.

If you feel the taste of coffee overpowering then you can skip frosting and serve the cake as-is with cup of hot tea/coffee/milk. I generally skip frosting when it comes to kids as they find the taste overpowering. But if you are avid coffee lover then you will really drool on this delightful cake

I had made Coffee cinnamon cake in the past when this I decided to alter the spices and bake Cardamom coffee cake and believe me, the taste was awesome. I had baked this cake as part of Sprig Gourmet Cake competition

Do share your experience once you bake this amazing cake

Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 25 mins Total time: 55 mins

Servings: 10

For Cake

  • 3 tbsp Cardamom
  • 3 Eggs
  • 2 Egg Yolks
  • 1/4 cup Strong Coffee
  • 2 cups Flour
  • 1.5 cups Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Sour Cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 220g soft unsalted Butter
  • 1 tbsp Sprig Vanilla Extract

For Frosting

  • 420 g soft unsalted Butter
  • 2 teaspoon Sprig Vanilla Extract
  • 3 cup Icing Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Cold Strong Coffee
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt

Steps to prepare

  • All ingredients mentioned in recipe should be at room temperature.
  • Preheat oven to 170 deg cel and line two 8 inch cake pans with baking paper
  • In a bowl, whisk egg yolks, eggs, vanilla extract, sour cream and coffee
  • In a separate bowl, sieve flour, baking soda and salt. Add sugar and cardamom to this flour mix. Mix well
  • Slowly add butter to flour mixture and mix until the mixture resembles coarse sand.
  • Gradually add wet ingredients (eggs mix) and blend until just combined
  • Divide the batter and pour into prepared pans. Level evenly
  • Bake for 20-30 minutes until done
  • Allow to cool for 30 minutes in the pans. Demould and cool completely on wire rack
  • In a bowl, add 420 g butter and blend well for 2 minutes
  • Gradually add icing sugar and blend well. You need to add 1/2 cup icing sugar at a time and blend. Do not add all the sugar at once
  • Add coffee, vanilla extract and salt to butter frosting. Blend well
  • Slice top of cakes. This is optional. I prefer even layered tops hence I generally slice the top layer for frosting
  • Now place it over serving dish. Start frosting top layer evenly
  • Place second cake and do crumb coating on all sides and top
  • Chill cake for 1 hour and now do final level frosting.
  • Slice and serve this delicious heavenly cake
